Application of moment and Fourier descriptors to the accurate estimation of elliptical-shape parameters

چکیده
Accurate estimation of the parameters of an elliptical shape is required in various machine-vision and computer-vision problems. In our previous work, we have addressed this problem by proposing to optimize a weighted minimum-squares-error (MSE) function. As a continuation of this work, we have studied other techniques for elliptical-parameter estimation, ones applying elliptical-Fourier descriptors, moments of area, and moments of perimeter. A study, to be reported here, was carried out to evaluale the comparative performance of the above-mentioned three techniques and the one based on the weighted MSE function. The limitation and degree of accuracy of each technique was determined, it was found that different elliptical-parameterestimation techniques must be applied depending on acceptable computational cost, number of parameters to be estimated, the required degree of accuracy, and the specific conditions under which the estimation must be perfornned.

A new shape retrieval method using the Group delay of the Fourier descriptors
In this paper, we introduced a new way to analyze the shape using a new Fourier based descriptor, which is the smoothed derivative of the phase of the Fourier descriptors. It is extracted from the complex boundary of the shape, and is called the smoothed group delay (SGD). The usage of SGD on the Fourier phase descriptors, allows a compact representation of the shape boundaries which is robust ...

متن کاملPartial shape matching using convex hull and Fourier descriptors
An application of Fourier descriptors and convex hull for shape analysis is presented. Convex hull is used for dividing a shape into small parts. Amplitude spectrum which is invariant to scaling, translation and choosing a starting point is obtained from the Fourier descriptors (see e.g [1-3]) and used for comparison. All calculations are performed with the author's software and some algorithms...
متن کاملParameterization of Written Signatures based on EFD
In this work we propose a method to quantify written signatures from digitalized images based on the use of Elliptical Fourier Descriptors (EFD). As usually signatures are not represented as a closed contour, and being that a necessary condition in order to apply EFD, we have developed a method that represents the signatures by means of a set of closed contours. One of the advantages of this me...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Semi-Elliptical Axial Crack in Pipe Bend Using XFEM
In this work, XFEM is employed to obtain the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of a semi elliptical part through thickness axial crack. In XFEM, additional functions are employed to enrich the displacement approximation using partition of unity approach. Level set functions are approximated using higher order shape functions in the crack front elements to ensure the accurate modeling of the crack...
